Originally developed for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder in an outpatient setting, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has now shown effectiveness in 73 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) across additional contexts, for broader populations, and at substantial cost savings to communities compared to “treatment as usual.” Research and clinical success have resulted in an explosion in the popularity of this treatment.

Informal adaptations to the DBT model have also proliferated as agencies with limited funding for formal training and staffing respond to competing demands to provide high-quality treatment and serve large populations. Concerns about the effectiveness of these simplified adaptations have become an important issue for consumer groups and for those who fund these services.

This introductory training will provide an overview of the DBT model, highlighting each component of the comprehensive treatment. The training will also explore the complexity of issues surrounding the “adapt or adopt” conflict. Creative responses that represent a synthesis of these polarities, designed to preserve adherent treatment, will be discussed, and time will be made available for consultation on program start-up.

In addition, new developments in the accreditation of programs and certification of providers will be introduced, with discussion of their implications for treatment funding.

Who should attend?

This training is open to providers of all training levels in mental health settings. Certificates of attendance will be provided to those who attend the full training.
